There had been a possibility last year to have a provincial Governmet with SPD, Green and Left Allaince. Till october 2008 they was only one key member of SPD Mrs. Dagmer, who was against any sort of coalition with the Left Allaiance. But in mid-october another three members of SPD joined her to stop making any three party coalition and also to stop a mionrity Government with the support of the Left. This left phobia led to a re-election of Hessen parliament. CDU gained some of their formerly lossed seats, FDP gained couple of seats, Lefts gained some vote but the big loser was SPD and Green. Because of their four anti-left members they let CDU back in power. One year before there was a possibility to have some sort of revolutionary Government in Hessen, because of left-phobia after one year, CDU Goverment led by Roland Koch who had been strongly criticised for more than a decade for his ultra-right attitude, regained power, which could have been treated as kind of political death of SPD in Hessen. Being a student of politics, I have talked with couple of immigrant voters who are generally treated as so called SPD votebank. None of them took part in the provincial election, because as immigrants it is almost impossible for them to vote for a right wing party like CDU and at the same time they are also pissed off with SPD for their continious political plunders.
Now, probably because of the global economic crisis, CDU/FDP coalition start practicing kind of social democracy. One of the major issues against CDU in last ten years was to start collecting tution fees from the university students. The coalition declared last month that they are not going to put any tution fees in this lagislature time that means at least till january 2013.
The Left Allaince may grow quite bigger in the next couple of years but probably not big enough to form the provincial government or to lead a coaliton. That means the rightwing forces are going to controll the power politics, at least in Hessen, for another decade.
